Labour MP Jess Phillips opposes early release of violent criminals
Phillips: "We need to keep our communities safe"
MP for Birmingham Yardley calls for tougher sentences for violent offenders
Labour MP Jess Phillips has said she opposes the early release of violent criminals, arguing that it puts communities at risk.
Phillips, who is the MP for Birmingham Yardley, said: "We need to keep our communities safe. Violent criminals should not be let out of prison early, they should be serving their full sentences."
Phillips' comments come after it was announced that the government is planning to release up to 4,000 prisoners early in an attempt to ease overcrowding in prisons. However, Phillips said that this would be a "mistake".
"Releasing violent criminals early will only put our communities at risk," she said. "These criminals have committed serious crimes and they should be punished accordingly."
Phillips called for tougher sentences for violent offenders, saying that they need to be "deterred from committing further crimes".
"We need to send a clear message that violence will not be tolerated," she said. "We need to protect our communities and keep them safe."
