War in Ukraine: The Heavy Toll of Destroyed and Captured Vehicles and Equipment

Cataloging the Losses

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has resulted in a staggering number of destroyed and captured vehicles and equipment, leaving both sides facing significant material losses.

Ukrainian Losses

According to the Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) website Oryx, photographic evidence suggests that Ukraine has lost over 3500 combat vehicles, including tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces. While some of these vehicles can be repaired, others are beyond salvage.

Russian Gains

Russia has also claimed to have captured a substantial number of Ukrainian vehicles, including over 600 tanks, 1,500 armored vehicles, and 600 artillery pieces.

Russian Losses

The losses suffered by Russia have also been significant. Oryx has documented over 2,500 destroyed or captured Russian vehicles, including tanks, armored vehicles, and aircraft. Experten estimate that Russia may have lost over 15,000 mechanized systems.

Impact on the War Effort

The loss of vehicles and equipment has had a profound impact on both sides' war efforts. Ukraine has been heavily reliant on Western arms supplies to replenish its losses, while Russia has been forced to rely on older, less capable equipment.
