Transformer Fire Leads To Alert At Georgia Nuclear Power Plant

Vogtle Nuclear Plant Declares Emergency Alert

Electrical Fire Prompts Alert Level

Georgia Power declared an emergency alert at Plant Vogtle, its largest nuclear facility, on Tuesday afternoon due to a small electrical fire. The fire broke out around noon and threatened an unspecified area within the plant.

Plant employees extinguished the fire, and the alert was lifted shortly after 2:30 p.m. Georgia Power spokesperson John Kraft described the fire as "small" and said the situation was under control.

The emergency alert level was issued for Vogtle Units 1 and 2, located near Augusta. This is the second alert at the plant in recent weeks. On July 28, a fire in a non-nuclear building triggered an alert that was later downgraded.

Georgia Power is investigating the cause of the fire. There were no reports of injuries or damage to the nuclear reactors.
